I’m all about that base, ’bout that base, baselayer……
It goes without saying that a decent base layer is vital in keeping you warm on the bike as the mercury drops. Layering is key to trapping air and thus maintaining a temperature.
Wool, and particularly Merino wool has great thermal properties and is, of course, a natural fibre. One problem with wool for some people can be that itchy, scratchy feeling. This is more often than not caused by Lanolin, a natural ‘grease’ secreted by the sheep to help shed water. To prevent this itch the Lanolin is removed from the wool in these garments. Wool is also much better as resisting the bacteria that causes ‘thermal pong’.
Now if you are looking for some layers to keep you warm, I don’t think you can do much worse than turning to our friends in Scandinavia. Halvarssons are a Swedish company that have been making motorcycle clothing for man years. Take that experience and know-how, add modern fabric and technology and you are on to a winner.
